I also listened to the broadcast and agree that Mrs Long was the most competent speaker.

At long last I have had the time to listen to the pod-cast on the radio. It was a very professional piece which provided a real insight into the life of this amazingly woman. Clearly all three of those on the panel were experts in their fields and in my view, Mrs Long certainly knew her stuff, particular the quotes of the persian poet. More please!

Disappointing interview on Woman's Hour today using Georgina Howell whose book about Gertrude Bell is factually incorrect and therefore diminishers her credibility. Sadly the opportunity to promote the extraordinary Gertrude Bell was lost by a mediocre dialogue from Ms Howell. As for the film, I have seen it and would recommend it highly. Please don't criticise or judge until you have seen it!

The Georgina Howell interview was very disappointing and contained many challengeable statements. There are better authorities from whom to choose to speak about Bell -- and they have seen the film.

Why on earth didn't the BBC contact Jan Long? She probably knows more about Gertrude Bell than anyone else and would at least ensure her "facts" were correct before publishing or broadcasting. I have complained to the BBC and think others should do likewise.

When will the film about Gertrude Bell be released?
Reply
hello, just to inform you that the film is due for general release in September. I don't knwo where you live, but I have requested the theatre in Ledbury to book it and I have had a very positive response from the Theatre manager who is willing to consider showing it in the Spring of 2016. I would certainly urge you to see it.

I read that the film on the life of Gertrude Bell has not been well received by the critics.

Regretably there have been unflattering criticisms, one headline was Downton in the Dunes! Werner herzog admits he has taken liberties with facts, but that is what film makers do - you need look no further than the inaccuracies in Lawrence of Arabia! However, don't be put off. Queen of the Desert is a wonderful film, with fabulous costumes, stunning scenery, marvellous musical and sound track and a brilliant performance by Nicole Kidman. I urge you to see the film for what it is, an esacpe into the past in the company of an extraordinary woman - Gertrude Bell.

Yes indeed, poor Gertrude Bell is indeed a bit neglected at the moment, but there are events being organised as I write this. A major exhibition about her life is going to open in Newcastle upon Tyne at the Museum in February which will feature pictures and items not seen before. Also the documentary on her life being made in the USA is to be released, and I give lectures and presentations Gertrude Bell at least twice a month, so she is far from forgotten. I'm awaiting word about when the Werner Herzog film, starring Nicole Kidman, entitled Queen of the Desert is to be released in this country, having already been seen in Berlin. So keep tuned in!

You might like to know about the "Borders and Beyond" (BABITME) conference in York next June 17-18. This will explore many of the Middle Eastern themes which Gertrude Bell herself explored. Please contact me if you would like further information.

I read with interest of a forthcoming book by Jan L and Graham B. It might be an idea to have a look at mine. It is 'The Only Woman at Gallipoli' - and you can guess who that was. You can see details at Amazon. Regards John Howell

I first read about Gertrude Bell in Jan Morris' Farewell the Trumpets. I have read The Letters and have just finished The Earlier Letters. Persian Pictures is on the way. I am interested in your comments regarding the inaccuracies in Ms Howell's book. I was thinking of getting it, but thought I might be disappointed having read both books of letters. My comment when I finished reading The Letters was: Are these from someone about to take her own life? I just find no trace in them of any foreboding or depression. That to me is the enigma.

There is a great article in Minerva magazine about Ms. Bell. It mentioned a 96 minute film in which Nicole Kidman portrays Gertrude. How can the general public get access to viewing this? I enjoyed a previous bio entitled, "Desert Queen". Thanks!

Hello John Powell, thanks for your comment. The Film was not released in the UK, sadly, but is available on Amazon (I have a copy) do see it for its own value, a romantic story with wonderful scenery, musical score and the fine acting of Miss Kidman. A documentary Film has also now been released called "Letters from Baghdad" Excellent production with the narrative voiceover by the amazing Tilda Swinton.
